Overview

The Check and Challenge group have taken part in a variety of tasks over the last year.

They have been:

  • Consulting on policies
  • Conducting reviews
  • Attending training session

Consulting on Policies

The group have taken part in consultations on policies that were introduced during 2022 / 23.

This includes the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy and a new Financial Wellbeing Strategy.

They also told the Council what they would like to see in an 'easy read' version of the Housing Allocations policy.

Reviews

The group have been asked to conduct quarterly reviews on how South Tyneside Council Housing Services manages complaints.

They conducted a desk review and produced a report with 22 recommendations earlier this year.

The group have also been out in the community reviewing empty homes and checking them inside and outside to make sure that they meet the lettable standard.

Their latest review saw the group take part in mystery shopping to investigate the information provided to customers when they want to make a complaint.

They also had conversations with customers to understand their experiences during the complaints process.

Training sessions

The group have attended training sessions by Show Racism the Red Card and received equality and diversity training from Difference Northeast.

They also attended an online seminar on complaints handling and received energy advice from the Green Doctor.
